About

DNS Yogi is a project created by Chris Jean. The goal is to offer high quality DNS and domain tools that help you manage your DNS and find out more about domains of interest quickly and easily.

I know that there are literally dozens of sites out there that offer similar services. So, you might be asking yourself why I would bother to build yet another one. In order to fully explain, you’ll first need to know why I think other sites are lacking.

There are many free DNS tool sites out there, but they have problems. I have yet to find a single free DNS site that tries to format the output in a very easy to read format. Most of them spit out raw output from command line tools with very little or no parsing to improve readability. I know how to read this information, but it really should be cleaned up to make the information easier to skim. In addition, these free sites share a similar goal: get money from you via ads. So, their goal isn’t making it easy for you to use their tools; rather, it is to greatly increase the chances that you will click on their ads. You see this with many tool sites that have ads in seemingly random places or slapped inside the tool output.

As for the paid DNS tool sites, they could be good, but they overdo the selling aspect. For instance, I used to be a big fan of DNS Stuff, but not anymore. DNS Stuff used to be free. They then went to a paid model, which I gladly paid for. Unfortunately, it went downhill from here. As a paying customer, I was constantly bombarded by email ads to buy even more, a new package with a higher price was created, all the new tools (and some of the functionality of some of the old tools) were only available in this new package, and the pricing on the standard package went up. Somewhere in the middle of all of this, using their tools became more difficult as standard requests would not produce results; rather, the request would produce an ad page asking me to upgrade. I would have to do the query again just to get the results. At this point, I decided that I had enough and didn’t renew my annual subscription.

These experiences with other DNS tools sites have pushed me to create my own tool site.

To be frank, I’m building this site for me. I want to be able to do extremely fast queries. I want to be able to quickly type requests in from the address bar of my browser with a consistent format. I don’t want to be pestered by the site; I just want it to work. Finally, I want the output from the tools to be extremely helpful and provide more utility than if I simply ran a tool from a terminal window. All these things come together to form the foundation of what I’m building with DNS Yogi.

I have no idea what type of future DNS Yogi will have, but I want to make this promise to you: DNS Yogi will always be about ease of use and quality results.
